Top 10 Longest and Shortest Flights in the World

There are many factors that decide the distance of a flight. One of the major ones is the fuel capacity hence, some will always make a quick stop for a refuel in a long flight situation. While reasons for short flights can be linked to territorial disadvantage or conflict-induced restrictions.

This list was compiled from a 2025-2026 flight data thus, may change in the course of time since we can’t deny the skies the presence of those innovative man-made big birds. Below are the longest and shortest flights ever recorded as seen in multiple flight data base.

Top 10 Longest Flights in the World

1. The Singapore (SIN) – New York (JFK):

The flight was operated by a Singapore Airlines outbound flight. Outbound: SQ24, return: SQ23. It is currently the largest commercial airline in the world while making one of the biggest round-trip flights of approximately 15,349 km (9,537 miles) – measuring 18 hours (if the winds are good).

2. Singapore (SIN) – Newark (EWR)

This is another milestone attained by Singapore Airlines. Flight SQ22 was outbound, while SQ21 served as the return flight. The record shows it covered 15,344 km, approximately 9,534 miles. It held the position of the world’s longest flight for a few years before the JFK air route was launched. The airline often departs from Singapore Changi (SIN) Terminal 3 and arrives at Newark Liberty (EWR) Terminal B. It might also interest you to know that the plane is specially designed for ultra-long-haul travel, contains 161 passengers, and doesn’t have Economy class seats.

3. Doha (DOH) – Auckland (AKL):

This flight is operated by Qatar Airways, outbound flight at QR920 and returning flight at QR921. It covered approximately 14,535 km (9,032 miles). It has been named one of the top 5 longest commercial flights in the world. Normally, this would be a Boeing 777-200LR journey, but it is done on an Airbus A350-1000 in approximately 16 hrs. and 10 minutes.

4. Perth (PER) – London (LHR):

This is operated by Qantas as flight QF9: outbound, and QF10: return, covering approximately 14,500 km (9,010 miles). This is the first non-stop commercial linking flight from Australia and the UK. Currently, Qantas Airlines has suspended the non-stop flight service because of the Middle East airspace closure due to the ongoing Iran-US/Israel conflict. This has increased the flight hours from 17.5 hours to 21 hrs.

5. Melbourne (MEL) – Dallas (DFW):

Also operated by Qantas, it had its outbound flight QF21 and return flight QF22, covering approximately 14,472 km (8,992 miles). This is one of the longest non-stop flights in the world and serves as the major gateway for Australian travelers into the United States. This flight took 15 hours and 45 minutes using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The choice of a Dreamliner is because of its weight. It is more weight-efficient than the Airbus A380.

6. Auckland (AKL) – New York (JFK):

This is a trans-Pacific route measuring approximately 14,200 km (8,823 miles). It’s operated by Air New Zealand and Qantas: the major carriers currently dominating the route. This is a 16-hour 15-minute flight, on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner plane (for both airlines). The reason for this choice of plane is related to its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. Air New Zealand operates 3 times weekly: Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and takes off from Auckland International Terminal, landing at JFK Terminal 1. Meanwhile, Qantas operates 4 times weekly. It departs Auckland International Terminal, landing at JFK Terminal 8.

7. Dubai (DXB) – Auckland (AKL):

This route is operated by Emirates’ flight EK448: outbound and EK449: return. It covers a distance of 14,200 km (8,823 miles), using an Airbus A380. This is one of the longest flights across Australia and the Indian Ocean and operates daily from International Terminal 3. The Airbus A380 in-use operates a 4-class sitting arrangement: Economy Class, Premium Economy, Business Class, and First Class. It also has a little bit of luxury. The first-class section comes with Shower Spas and Private suites.

8. Houston (IAH) – Sydney (SYD):

This 13,833 km (8,596 miles) route is operated by United Airlines as flight UA101 (for outbound operations), and UA102 (for return). This is one of the world’s non-stop flights and serves as one of the most important links to the trans-Pacific, Southern and Central part of the United States. This journey takes approximately 17 hours to complete, with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

9. Auckland (AKL) – New York (JFK):

This is a 14,207 km (8,828 miles) flight operated by joint management of Air New Zealand and Qantas and takes approximately 17h 35m to complete. Both airlines uses Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which, according to both managements, was picked because of it’s fuel efficiency.

10. Bengaluru (BLR) - San Francisco (SFO):

This is the longest non-stop flight by Air India, and by extension, the longest haul in the world. Done in a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft, it covers approx. 8,701 miles, connecting the two tech hubs: Silicon Valley of India and the Silicon Valley in San Francisco, approx.16-18 hours.

Top 10 Shortest Flights in the World

Shortest commercial flights are usually found in difficult terrains. This is usually in landscapes where conventional transport is either non-existent or slow. The maximum flight time of short flights is 15 minutes, while the shortest takes less than 2 minutes. Below are the world’s shortest flights:

1. Westray – Papa Westray:

This is a 2.7 km (1.7 mile) flight operated by Loganair. This is world’s shortest flight service with a time distance of just 90 seconds. The flight was heading for Orkney Islands, Scotland. It has officially been recognized as the shortest commercial flight by Guinness World Records. This is a 10-seater Britten-Norman BN-2B-26 Islander plane with a twin-engine propeller specifically designed for short distance flights.

2. Connemara – Inis Meáin:

This is the shortest flight ever scheduled in Ireland. This is a 16.7 km (10.4 mile) operated by Aer Arann service and has been doing this since 1970. It connects the Irish mainland to the Aran Islands in just about 6 minutes. The airline company uses Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander aircraft for this operation: a robust, twin-engine plane with a 9-passenger capacity.

3. Caye Chapel – Caye Caulker:

This is a 3.9 km (2.4 mile) flight. Managed by Maya Island Air, this short flight to Belize has been named one of the world’s shortest commercial flights. It’s worth to note that this flight is exclusively reserved for both members and prospective members of the private Island owner’s club. However, the standard travel time to Caye Caulker by air can also take up to 10 minutes from Belize City) or San Pedro.

4. Karpathos – Kasos:

This 19–21 km (12–13 miles) flight operated by Olympic Air takes about 5 minutes to get to its destination. This flight connects islands in the Dodecanese archipelago, especially the ones divided by the Aegean Sea. This distance is covered with an ATR 42-600: a twin-engine turboprop plane, with a 46–48 passenger capacity. The flight often operates its hopper service to either Rhodes or Crete daily per week.

5. Minami-Daito – Kita-Daito

This 11 km (6.8 miles) connects two Japanese islands in a flight time of just 15 minutes. Managed by Ryukyu Air Commuter, this short flight was purposely built to increase the flights' direct connection from the Okinawa main island to other territories. This was operated using 50-sitter capacity Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 COMBI cargo airplanes. However, the flight was discontinued on August 1, 2024, for some unknown reason.

6. Little Cayman – Cayman Brac

This flight covers an aerial distance of 20–21 km (12–13 miles). This flight is considered the most important short air travel in the world because it connects multiple remote islands in the Caribbean’s Cayman Islands. Managed by Cayman Airways, the flight operates on about 25 flights weekly between Little Cayman and its surrounding islands, with multiple departures daily.

7. Hoolehua – Kalaupapa

This commercial flight is en route island of Molokai, Hawaii, and has been marked as the shortest in the world. Measuring 14 km (8.7 miles), this flight takes only 10 minutes and is operated by regional carriers like Southern Airways Express (under the Mokulele Airlines management). With a Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft, which is a single-engine 9-passenger turboprop aircraft. This flight serves as a major gateway to the Kalaupapa National Historical Park. This air route is the only means to reach the 2,000-foot sea cliffs aside from the grueling hike.

8. Saipan – Tinian

This 17 km (10.5 miles) short form air travel to the Northern Mariana Islands is operated by Freedom Air and takes just about 10 minutes to reach its destination. This flight is considered very important because of the way it connects the capital island with the smaller ones around it in a space of minutes.

9. Papeete – Moorea

This flight leads to French Polynesia, a 17 km (10.5 miles) distance from Papeete. It’s operated by Star Marianas Air (sometimes referred to as SAPSAN or Jet Lite), and can connect within 15 minutes in a Single-piston engine Piper aircraft similar to Saratoga or the Cherokee Six. As of April 2026, the company operates 9 flights daily. Numbering 63 flights weekly.

10. Gallen – Friedrichshafen

This is a 21 km (13 miles) international route across the popular Lake Constance, with a flight time of 8 minutes. This flight operation is handled by Austrian ‘People’s’ (formally People’s Vienna line), but is no longer operational today. The operation was launched in November 2016 and was cancelled in April 2017, mainly because of low demand.

Conclusion

There are possibilities that airlines may shorten their travel time while making longer distances, as aviation technology continues to improve. Since one of the most deciding factors of long-haul travels is the fuel capacity, and innovative technologies like green hydrogen energy sources may motivate even an even longer hauls.
